1. Kenetics – Toothache
A young group of five hailing from North London, Kenetics are manufacturing a quirky brand of lo-fi indie that has brought success to bands such as Foals and WU LYF, also sounding similar to Rapids!, featured in a previous Angle article. Toothache starts off very professionally and builds into a catchy single, with energetic, rotating boy-girl vocals in the chorus peppered with plenty of syncopated guitar rhythms and soft keys. With songs such as these, there is set to be a good future for the band this year. Toothache can be heard on Soundcloud here
2. Jessie Ware – Running
Although primarily known for her presence on the East London producer SBTRKT, ‘Running’ is the latest attempt by Jessie Ware to forge a solo career for herself. The track is instantly warm and comfortable and feels very much like relaxing into a good sofa, for her soft and glamorous voice is punctuated by sharp yet triumphant trumpet-style synths. And this imagery becomes more and more suitable as producer Julio Bashmore adds percussion, trilling guitars, and a further array of echoes and synths. ‘Running’ is due for release on April 2.
3. Kindness – Gee Up
Originally a B-Side to his 2009 single ‘Swingin’ Party’, the elusive Adam Bainbridge a.k.a. Kindness is releasing the bouncy electro indie-pop ‘Gee Up’ in its own right. The video only features 1:30 of the track itself, but its drum beat, chorus singing, and retro sound are instantly contagious. Bainbridge is refreshing in that he will quickly get you up on your feet while simultaneously mocking the very way he is able to get you to do so. Kindness release their album World, You Need a Change of Mind through Polydor on March 19.
