Liverpool four-piece Circa Waves have been pigeon-holed into every genre from indie to pop to garage-rock. In reality, their music is a combination of all of these genres, channeling a sound that can contemporarily be compared to The Vaccines, but is also reminiscent of early work by The Strokes and The Libertines.
It was the last shot for frontman Kieran Shuddall. After being in a string of unsuccessful bands, he reached a point at which he knew he had to make a decision between giving music a proper shot, or getting a “real job”, he told The Telegraph. 7 months later and Circa Waves have just released ‘Get Away’ / ‘Good For Me’ via Transgressive/Kissability, and have announced plans to embark on their debut headline tour in February.
There’s a certain rawness to Circa Waves which separates these lads from the rest of the indie-rock crop. ‘Good For Me’ is charmingly rough-around-the-edges and shines with buoyant guitar riffs and a killer chorus, complemented by the genial home-made video which was unveiled last week. However, it was ‘Get Away’ which really caught the attention of the nation when it premiered in October. Like a polished Palma Violets demo, the raucous pulse set by the guitars is the backdrop to Shuddall’s chirpy vocals which tell a lovesick tale. It’s no wonder that they were recently named NME’s “New Band of the Week”.
Circa Waves provide an undeniably tasty indie-pop-rock smorgasboard of music to throw yourself around a room to.
