An 18-year-old woman died yesterday during the first day of Winchester’s Boomtown Fair festival.
The teenager was taken ill at the festival on Thursday before being pronounced dead shortly after arriving in hospital.
A spokeswoman explained that “on site medical services responded and an 18-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious. The woman’s next of kin and the coroner have been informed.”
The circumstances around the woman’s death are currently under investigation, with Hampshire Police working with festival organisers.
This isn’t the first major incident to have happened at the Hampshire festival, which is billed as “The UK’s Maddest City.” In 2011 a 45-year-old woman died at Boomtown Fair following an ecstasy overdose. Last year saw 27 people arrested due to drugs charges, with £130,000 of drugs seized by police.
Now in its fifth year, the four-day festival boasts a line up featuring over 300 artists, including headliners Toots and the Maytals, Mad Caddies, and The Pavrov Stellar Band. Boomtown Fair will continue until Sunday.
