Australian comedian Chris Lilley has announced that he will reprise the character of Jonah Takalua for an upcoming series.
The delinquent teenager previously appeared in the 2007 mockumentary series Summer Heights High, but it has now been confirmed that the character will be brought back for a series which will be broadcast next year.
Chris Lilley is currently appearing on screen in Australia as another Summer Heights star – Ja’mie King – in Ja’mie: Private School Girl which follows the character’s last few weeks at Hillford Grammar School. The show which is expected to air on BBC Three in early 2014 is a departure from his previous series Angry Boys.
Jonah’s last scenes in Summer Heights High saw an emotional exit as he was expelled from the school and told by his father that he was to be sent to live in Tonga. It is expected that this new series, which will exclusively focus on Jonah, will show him getting up to mischief as part of island life.
Controller of BBC Three, Zai Bennett, confirmed that Jonah will return to UK screens next year, saying: “BBC Three is the UK home of Chris’s brilliant comedy characters and having already announced that Ja’mie will be coming to BBC Three in 2014, I can’t wait to see Jonah on the channel next year too.”
