This weekend, Pixar’s latest animation Inside Out was released in America to record-breaking acclaim, becoming the biggest original film opening to ever be released in the US.
Jurassic World still reigns supreme in the number one box office position, but Inside Out has received the biggest debut of an original concept film (which Disney defines as a ‘non-sequel and non-sourced’ piece of work). It does however mark the first time that a Pixar film has not opened to the number one spot at the US box office.
The film debuted with an estimated $91.1 million in North American ticket sales, which surpasses the record made by James Cameron’s Avatar, which opened with $77 million in 2009. Pete Docter’s original film – which depicts key human emotions as personified characters – also ranks as the second biggest Pixar opening, falling just behind Toy Story 3, which debuted in 2010 with $110.3 million.
Globally, the film’s main competitor – Jurassic World – has already earned $981.3 million and is on track to become the latest film to hit $1 billion, with no signs of slowing down. It has also broken several records previously held by Marvel’s Avengers.
Inside Out features the voice talents of several prominent US comics, including Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader and Lewis Black.
