Disney’s Aladdin musical is coming to the West End in Summer 2016

Legendary theatre producer, Cameron Mackintosh has confirmed that the Disney Broadway hit Aladdin, will soon be arriving on a magic carpet, flying straight into the Prince Edward Theatre in Summer 2016.

A West End production of the Disney musical has long been rumoured, ever since the show found phenomenal success on Broadway. For quite a while, the show was thought to be a replacement for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of Cats at The London Palladium. It has instead now been revealed to be taking the place of Mackintosh’s production of Miss Saigon.

The musical is based on Disney’s 1992 animation, which featured the late Robin Williams as the iconic voice behind the Genie.

The show is currently playing sold out shows at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The original show was nominated for five Tony Awards, with James Monroe Iglehart winning Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the Genie.

Aladdin tells the story of a young street rat who inadvertently becomes the master of a wish-granting Genie. As he uses his wishes to better his position, he falls in love with the princess Jasmine and must go on a journey to turn his life around so that might win her hand in marriage. Meanwhile, a venomous foe called Jafar lurks in the shadows, plotting to take the Kingdom of Agrabah for himself.

The announcement means that Miss Saigon – which is currently in its second year of production – will close at the Prince Edward Theatre at around this time, next year – possibly moving onto a nationwide tour.

This is not the first time that Mackintosh has worked with Disney. He is currently producing a nationwide tour of the multi award-winning musical Mary Poppins which is arriving at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from 25th May-19th June 2016.
