A new trailer for the heartbreaking LGBT drama, Freeheld, has been released.
Starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, the film is based on the 2005 real-life documentary by Cynthia Wade, which followed a same sex couple and their fight for equality.
A decorated New Jersey police detective, Laurel Hester (Moore) is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and so, naturally, wants to leave her hard earned pension to her domestic partner, Stacie (Page) when she dies. However, county officials – the so-called Freeholders – conspire to prevent Laurel from doing this. And so begins a lengthy legal battle, which sees the couple rallying for justice.
Michael Shannon also stars as Laurel’s hard-nosed colleague, Dane Wells, while Steve Carell appears as the couple’s activist lawyer, Steven Goldstein. The film is directed by Peter Sollett and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner – who also wrote about the legal battles of a gay man with AIDS in the 1993 film, Philadelphia.
Given that it is set a mere 10 years ago, the film is sure to be an affecting watch – especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling to finally allow gay couples to marry in the United States.
Freeheld has yet to receive a UK release date, but is set to open in the US on 16th October. Watch the trailer below.
