Winter may be coming, but the end is also in sight, as according to the producers’ current plans, Game of Thrones will likely come to a close in it’s eighth season.
Speaking at the TCAs press tour yesterday (30th July), HBO president Michael Lombardo revealed that showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have a firm plan on when to end the fantasy series.
“I think seven seasons and out has never been the conversation; the question is how much beyond the seventh season are we going to do,” Lombardo explained. “[The producers are] feeling like there’s probably two more years after six. I would love for them to change their minds, but that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
However, Lombardo was quick to add that an eighth season end date wouldn’t necessarily mean that other Westerosi projects were out of the question. “I would be open to anything [the producers]want to do,” Lombardo insisted. “There’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel… At this point, all the focus is on figuring out the next few years with this show.”
A Song of Ice And Fire author, George R.R Martin, also recently hinted at a possible movie to wrap up any lingering storylines that run over the course of the episodic HBO series. Martin is currently working on the final two novels of his epic fantasy series, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
Meanwhile, filming for the sixth season of Game of Thrones is already under way, with the finished episodes set to air in Spring 2016. The show dominated this year’s Emmy Award nominations, with nods in 24 categories.
