Channel 5 has announced that it is making a UK version of Lip Sync Battle.

The broadcaster has ordered a total of eight 30-minute episodes to air at some point in 2016. The hit musical comedy show sees celebrities pitted against each other in a spectacular miming contest featuring their favourite songs.

The premise originated as a segment on the US chat show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and was first realised by British comedian, Stephen Merchant. The first season of the US version – hosted by LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen – has been a major ratings success for American cable network, Spike, ever since it launched earlier this year.

“There is a great buzz around Lip Sync Battle – it’s one of the most talked-about and fought-over formats in the world of TV right now,” Channel 5’s Ben Frow said in a press release. “We’re excited that our developing relationship with Spike in the US has made a UK version of the show possible and look forward to bringing entertainment back to the heart of Channel 5 primetime.”

The American version of the show has already seen some impressive lip sync performances from the likes of Justin Bieber, Mike Tyson, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Will Arnett and Jimmy Fallon. Channel 5 have yet to announce who will host the UK remake or who any of it’s celebrity competitors will be.
