Award-winning director, Wes Craven has sadly died at the age of 76.
The creator of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday (30th August) following a lengthy battle with brain cancer.
The director was best known for his redefining work in the horror genre. As well as creating the iconic, razor-clawed figure that is Freddy Krueger, Craven also directed all four Scream films. Some of his other movies include The Hills Have Eyes, Swamp Thing, The Last House on The Left and Vampire in Brooklyn. He also directed five episodes of macabre 80’s anthology series, The Twilight Zone.
Scream stars, Courtney Cox and Rose McGowan were the first to lead tributes to the late director, with Cox tweeting: “Today the world lost a great man, my friend and mentor, Wes Craven. My heart goes out to his family.” Meanwhile, McGowan said: “Thank you for being the kindest man, the gentlest man, and one of the smartest men I’ve known. Please say there’s a plot twist… Shedding tears now. A giant has left us.”
Craven is survived by his wife and two children. Watch the trailer for just one of Craven’s iconic films, below.
