Continuing their current trend of re-making and expanding on past classics, Disney are now set to create a musical sequel to their iconic 1964 film, Mary Poppins.
The House of Mouse have confirmed that the project is already in development, with Into The Woods‘ Rob Marshall attached to direct.
The new film is said to be set in London, 20 years after the events of the first movie and will take several storylines from P.L. Travers’ series of books to expand on the magical nanny’s further adventures with the Banks family.
The original musical starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and grossed over $100 million at the box office. Disney also recently produced Saving Mr Banks – the 2013 biopic which delved into the tumultuous behind-the-scenes story of the film and starred Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson as Walt Disney and P.L. Travers, respectively.
John DeLuca and Marc Platt are set to produce the new film. Details of the cast and release date have yet to be announced.
