Disney have confirmed that Auli’i Cravalho will voice their newest princess, Moana.
The 14-year-old from Oahu, Hawaii won the lead role after she caught the attention of a casting agent when singing at a charity competition in Oahu. Speaking to People magazine, Cravalho said: “From baby time to now, I wanted to be a Disney princess and then I wanted to be a singer or an actress.”
“Moana is such an amazing character,” she continued. “I just love watching how she goes along in this wonderful movie and grows as a person and helps her culture along the way.”
Moana is set 2,000 years ago in the South Pacific Oceania and will see the Polynesian princess push the boundaries set by her chief father by setting out on an impossible mission to fulfil her ancestors’ quest and find a fabled island.
On her journey she will be joined by a demigod called Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) and together they must overcome challenges and disasters in order to reach their destination.
Moana will be released in UK cinemas on 2nd December 2016. Watch Cravalho’s casting process below.
