British comedian Victoria Wood has sadly died at the age of 62, following a short battle with cancer.

In a statement, her publicist revealed that the writer, actress and comedian – who championed such classic series as Acorn Antiques and Dinnerladies – “died peacefully at her North London home with family this morning.”

A message on her Twitter page read: “We are devastated to confirm that our very special Victoria has sadly lost her short battle with cancer. Thank you for your support and love.”

Wood first appeared on TV in the late 1970’s in such shows as New Faces and The Summer Show before her breakthrough appearance in That’s Life!.

Wood is perhaps best known for her partnership with Julie Walters, who she worked with on several series including Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, Acorn Antiques, Dinnerladies and Pat and Margaret.
