Jim Broadbent is set to join the cast of Game of Thrones for the show’s seventh season.
According to an exclusive by Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-winning Brit has been signed for the eagerly anticipated penultimate season of the HBO fantasy series.
Quite who Broadbent will play within the show is unclear for the moment, with HBO only teasing that his role is “significant” in the wider season arc. Some vague casting descriptions have leaked in recent weeks, including that of a senior military general and an older priest – perhaps a remaining sparrow seeking vengeance? Though nothing is concrete when it comes to Thrones, these are sound possibilities for Broadbent’s role.
Broadbent is one of Britain’s best loved veteran performers, appearing in such films as Time Bandits, Brazil, Iris, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Harry Potter. He is infact the fourth Potter actor to make the switch from wizarding world to Westeros, following in the same suit as Natalia Tena (Osha/Nymphadora Tonks), David Bradley (Argus Filch/Walder Frey) and Ciaran Hinds (Aberforth Dumbledore/Mance Rayder).
Game of Thrones: Season 7 is set to film in Northern Ireland, Spain and Iceland and will premiere on HBO and Sky Atlantic at some point next summer.
