George RR Martin teases much darker storyline in The Winds of Winter

George RR Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series has stated that the upcoming sixth book,  The Winds of Winter, will be a much darker and grittier entry into the series.

In a recent Q&A, Martin said: “There are a lot of dark chapters right now in the book that I’m writing”. He went on to explain this further, saying that “It is called The Winds of Winter, and I’ve been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming. Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for. Some of the characters [are]in very dark places.”

Perhaps better known by most people as the basis for the hugely popular award-winning HBO show, Game of Thrones, Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire has thus far span five books, with the most recent entry, A Dance with Dragons, being released in 2011. Speculation has run rampant on a release date for The Winds of Winter but there has been no official confirmation of this yet.
