That’s live TV for you, folks! Following an accidental (but embarrassing) faux-announcement by Warren Beatty, Moonlight was named this year’s Best Picture winner at the 89th Academy Awards.
Beatty, who was given a previous winners card, accidentally named La La Land the winner, inviting the entire production team to the stage only to find that Moonlight were the true winners. Director Barry Jenkins also received the award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Mahershala Ali was named Best Supporting Actor.
La La Land still went home with plenty of their own awards though, including Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Cinematography, Production Design, Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘City of Stars’.
Manchester By The Sea was the other big winner of the night, with Casey Affleck and Kenneth Lonergan taking home the statuettes for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, respectively. Viola Davis picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fences.
Other films rewarded with golden accolades on the night included Zootopia (Animated Feature), Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (Costume), Hacksaw Ridge (Editing, Sound Mixing), The Jungle Book (Visual Effects), Arrival (Sound Editing) and Suicide Squad (yes, really – for Make Up!)
The Edge live-blogged the event, hosting a great night at The Stags along with our friends at FilmSoc. You can read our live blog here.
