‘How you doing?’, ‘We were on a break’, ‘Oh my god!’. Yes, this can only be Friends we’re talking about. Friends first hit our screens in 1994 and centered around 6 friends from New York, following their romantic interests, careers, and of course their infamous trips to the coffee shop. Friends became and still is a cultural phenomena; with 11 million British women trying out the famous ‘Rachel’ haircut, the Central Perk coffeehouse being imitated all over the world and even influenced language as research found that the use of the word ‘so’ was used more often than other intensifiers such as ‘very’ or ‘really’ due to its usage on the series. Although Friends was a sitcom, the drama of the show also captured audiences such as the secret relationship of Monica and Chandler, Phoebe being the surrogate mother to her brothers triplets and of course who could forget the on/off/on/off and back on again love between Ross and Rachel. One of the main reasons I enjoy watching Friends is that it is timeless and even though it began nearly twenty years ago the jokes are still funny and relevant today, as shown by the fact that E4 airs the show up to 8 times a day! Friends is undoubtedly one of the best and most successful sitcoms of the 90s and its relatable storylines, loveable characters and famous catchphrases still make it laugh out loud television to this day.
