From what we’ve heard of Swim Deep thus far it seems that these Birmingham boys are masters of summer escapism and whisking you off along with them. ‘The Sea’ continues with this growing trend and now I’m firmly in the belief that Swim Deep’s debut album will be the soundtrack to your summer.
Swim Deep have this knack for merging more muted, laid-back moments in with catchy surf-pop hooks—as has been demonstrated on their 2 previous releases. ‘The Sea’ does exactly the same, beginning with Austin Williams’s breezy croon against a simple guitar backing. It bursts to life during the chorus with a full technicolour ensemble of both fuzzy and crystalline guitars, tropical percussion and an organ that cascades through and brings everything together.
“Who’s got something, got something to say?” Williams asks as the rest of the band “oh-ahs” behind him. That’s also something Swim Deep have an apparent ear for—sing-a-long-ability. ‘The Sea’ will have a crowd with arms and vocal cords raised throughout the summer without people having to consciously think about it.
The great thing about the track is that it simply washes over you and brings summer along with it. If you’re needing something like that to break the cold spell, then Swim Deep are definitely the people to go looking for.
