La Roux – Trouble in Paradise

Released July 18th 2014, Polydor Records

Over the past two weeks we’ve been getting our writers, readers and editors to vote on their top 10 albums of 2014. We had over 110 different albums suggested, and there are some albums you’ll be shocked to see missing in the top 10 (alt-j and Ed Sheeran both narrowly missed out on a place in our list!) So we present to you, as voted by our contributors, out top 10 albums of the year!

First up we have Elly Jackson’s sophomore release Trouble in Paradise. Five years on since the release of her Grammy award winning debut record, and La Roux having split from being a synth pop duo to a solo act with the departure of Ben Langmaid, nobody was quite sure what Jackson’s second album would be like; but it was hugely successful, and has made it to number 10 of our list.

Statistics:

  • 14% of contributors included the album in their top 10
  • Of that 14%, no contributor ranked the album within their top 3.

“One of the best surprises I’ve had in years. Her debut had always been a rather guilty pleasure, but it’s so wonderful to see La Roux finally make music that she loves. Her true influences are everywhere on this addictive pop record, from Daft Punk to David Bowie, and they really shine through each memorable track.”
– Alex Meehan, Head of Events, ranked the album #5

“Strong, bright, confident, Elly’s finally got past the traumatic experience of attending a very nice supportive school that didn’t give her the opportunity to rebel (which really shows in her first few albums) and has settled down, become self assured and released an excellent album. She’s no longer ‘trying too hard’ to be quirky and unique, and this album’s all the better for it.”
– Anonymous, ranked the album #6
