Inevitably with a new Bond film on the horizon there’s been speculation aplenty on who would do the theme track. It didn’t take a long time for people to realise that despite how many names were being thrown about (including Muse for a while), there was only ever one real choice – Adele.
Within hours of release in the early hours of Friday morning, it was already at the top of the iTunes chart and when you listen, you can clearly hear why people are lapping it up. ‘Skyfall’ departs from the ‘rockier’ and less conventional tracks for the previous two Bond films. Instead it has gone for the classic piano-led, orchestral sound that has driven some of the best Bond themes before it. Unfortunately it almost backfires because, let’s be honest, we’ve all heard this before; the track isn’t really breaking any boundaries.
That being said, Adele’s voice fits perfectly and definitely helps to save this song from falling flat on its face. Her voice compliments the lyrics and the atmosphere perfectly and, as per normal, it’s powerful and emotive. It’s quite possibly the best female vocal on a Bond theme since Shirley Bassey.
Although ‘Skyfall’ is unlikely to surprise anyone, it’s not a bad thing. It’s a perfectly enjoyable track which will probably be remembered for being the best of Daniel Craig era-Bond.
