Following last year’s release of her experimental EP, M3LL15X, FKA twigs has dropped a brand new single entitled ‘Good to Love’, showcasing a different layer to the chameleon-like musical artist.
The track begins with twigs’ ethereal vocals alongside a distinctly quiet atmosphere. Although soft elements are not uncharacteristic of FKA twigs’ sound, a peaceful continuation and conventional song structure is what follows, and it is this that differentiates ‘Good to Love’ from twigs’ discography thus far.
Demonstrating a much more accessible sound, ‘Good to Love’ has an emotive identity, where the striking electronic depth is substituted for a vocal depth which in turn creates a very affectionate quality. Although there are electronic crackles that caress twigs’ tender vocals throughout the track, and the latter part of the track does feature an electronic surge, ‘Good to Love’ doesn’t have the jolting quality that listeners have come to expect from FKA twigs.
The song’s cathartic development doesn’t give in to the overwhelming epic sound that it beckons. Instead, it focuses on a vulnerability and a sensitivity of twigs which has never properly been exposed until now. This change is astoundingly welcome, where FKA twigs proves that – yet again – she can operate in an entirely different musical territory whilst synchronously seeming a master of it.
‘Good to Love’ is available now via Young Turks Recordings.
