DAB radio station Planet Rock, “the UK’s classic rock station”, today (December 30th) completed their 2011 end of year lists, dubbed “2011 in Rock“, naming the best rock artists, releases and events of the year in a number of categories. American mainstream rockers Foo Fighters claimed the best of the spoils, winning Band of the Year and Album of the Year for their seventh studio release Wasting Light. They also came third in the Best Live Act category, and fifth in the Film of the Year list. The lists are entirely generated by votes of the listeners, with over 50,000 votes cast across the nine categories this year.
Elsewhere in the lists, prog rock legends Rush were named Best Live Act; LA-based Rival Sons were awarded the title of Best New Band; former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash won Best Live Album for Made in Stoke; the Event of the Year accolade was attributed to the Black Sabbath reunion announcement; London’s High Voltage Festival was named Festival of the Year; Pink Floyd won the Reissue of the Year award for their Immersion re-releases of The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here; and the Film of the Year award was given to the Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski-directed biographical film Lemmy.
The full lists of winners and nominees, including mini-reviews, can be found on the Planet Rock website here.
