Southampton University Students’ Union (SUSU) have announced that electronic producer Sub Focus will be the headline act at this year’s Freshers’ Ball, alongside several other artists including Ms Dynamite, Modestep, and Grandmaster Flash.
The electronic producer has been releasing music since 2003, but has achieved significant chart success in the last 18 months with singles including ‘Out the Blue’, ‘Tidal Wave’, and ‘Endorphins’. His new single ‘Turn It Around’ features Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke and will be released on 15th September.
First year students who shell out £25 for a ticket (or those with a Master Pass), will get to see Sub Focus perform at the Freshers’ Ball two weeks after the release of his second album Torus.
Appearing alongside Sub Focus in The Cube will be Brit Award winner Ms. Dynamite who has rejuvenated her career in recent years featuring on tracks by Katy B, Magnetic Man, Redlight and Zinc. Also playing the Union’s nightclub will be one of the biggest names in UK dubstep, the electronic rockers Modestep who will perform hits including ‘Sunlight’ and ‘Feel Good’. Esteemed MC P Money will take to the stage throughout the night to ensure that excitement reaches fever pitch.
Elsewhere, US hip-hop giant and ‘The Message’ rapper Grandmaster Flash will perform in the West Ref, while The Stag’s Head will feature more of a live music focus. Britain’s Got Talent finalists Luminites will play, with seven-piece pop band Scarlett’s Roses also appearing on the busy line up.
The event, which is seen as the culmination of Freshers’ fortnight, will take place on Saturday 5th October in the Students’ Union, across four stages. The remaining acts to feature on the line up are expected to be released in the next few days through the Events at SUSU Facebook page, including the mystery line up for The Bridge.
SUSU recently announced the Master Pass: A £95 ticket which can be bought to gain access to all freshers’ events, including the Freshers’ Ball. The Master Pass will allow entry into over 200 events which are taking place across the freshers’ fortnight, beginning on 21st September. Discussing the Master Pass, SUSU President David Gilani said “I’m very pleased that new students can already see the value of the Master Pass, and we want to make sure that as many students as possible get involved. We’ve reacted directly to feedback from students to make sure that our events package is inclusive too, meaning that this really will be the biggest Freshers yet. I can’t wait for it to get started!”
Last year’s Freshers’ Ball saw Verne Troyer, Seann Walsh, The Loveable Rogues, Hadouken! and BBC Radio One’s Greg James descend on the Union.
The Master Pass is now on sale and can be purchased through the box office. Individual tickets to the Freshers’ Ball along with tickets to other events throughout freshers’ week will be available from 16th September.
