Game of Thrones was one of the shows to win big at this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony.
Taking place in Los Angeles last night, the ceremony saw Thrones‘ sixth seasons scoop three Emmys: the big title, Outstanding Drama Series, alongside Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Writing for Season 6’s ninth episode, ‘Battle of the Bastards’. The episode was met with massive critical acclaim (The Edge awarded it five stars), and was directed by Miguel Sapochnik and written by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Other victors included Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek, who scooped Outstanding Drama Actor (beating Kevin Spacey), and Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany, who plays six different clones in the show. For comedy, Transparent‘s Jeffrey Tambor took the Outstanding Lead Actor prize, for his performance as the transgender Maura Pferrman, while Veep queen Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Outstanding Lead Comedy Actress. 81-year-old Maggie Smith took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress, for her role as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey.
Other winners included Master of None writers Aziz Ansari (who also stars in the show) and Alan Yang. Their second episode, ‘Parents’, was highlighted for addressing immigrants to America from Asia, and the effect it has on the following generation. Ansari lost out on Best Comedic Actor however, and Master of None was beat by Veep for Outstanding Comedy Series. Sarah Paulson (who can currently be seen starring in the new season of American Horror Story) won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries, for her role in The People v. OJ Simpson. The miniseries took home an impressive four titles in total – beating Game of Thrones. However, GoT’s wins takes them to a record number of wins.
