Metronomy – Summer 08
The dreamy electropop project of Joe Mount hits album five this week through Because Music, following the likes of 2011’s Mercury Prize-nominated The English Riviera and Love Letters, a rather more floral and soulful affair that reached number 7 in the UK Album Chart on release in 2013. This time, Mount has abandoned bandmates in favour of doing all instrumentation, writing, and production himself, though he does welcome the assistance of Mixmaster Mike (‘Old Skool’) and Robyn (‘Hang Me Out To Dry,’ a track first mooted for The English Riviera) to help him look back to the time when the project began gaining steam.
Louis The Child & Icona Pop – ‘Weekend’
You might remember Swedish duo Icona Pop from such things as ‘I Love It’ and not that much else that has actually impacted outside their homeland, partially because they never released a studio version of ‘Someone Who Can Dance’ featuring Elliphant and Zara Larsson. You probably know even less of Louis The Child, a delightful electronic duo from Chicago who have remixed the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club with aplomb and made a happy splash with K.Flay-aided debut ‘It’s Strange’ late last year. ‘Weekend,’ their new record via Big Beat, combines infectious chants and a mysterious electronic wobble.
Blink-182 – California
Their first record written with Alkaline Trio guitarist Matt Skiba in the lineup, Blink-182’s comeback appears today via BMG. California, the band’s first set of new tracks since 2011, comes with a 30-second closer called ‘Brohemian Rhapsody,’ what Mark Hoppus describes as an element of progressive maturity, and more boisterous pop-punk riffs than you could shake a stick at.
Imani Williams feat. Sigala & Blonde – ‘Don’t Need No Money’
Imani Williams first appeared earlier this year with certified dance hitmakers Sigala and DJ Fresh on ‘Say You Do,’ interpolating Mariah Carey’s ‘Always Be My Baby’ with ease into one of the earliest signs we had of summer. Today, Norfolk’s finest – Sigala, by the way – repays the favour alongside recent Craig David collaborators Blonde on her own debut proper via Sony, which is surely destined for similar rotations as July kicks in and follows a theme that Galantis has already found quite successful.
Snoop Dogg – Coolaid
Remember when Snoop Dogg ceased to be canine upon being rechristened (and Reincarnated in reggae form) as Snoop Lion by a Rastafarian priest in 2012? Neither does he, apparently. Coolaid, his fourteenth solo LP, comes out today via Ca$h Machine Records under the tradtional monker and with its associated cartoonish west coast aesthetic. Collaborators include Jeremih, Swizz Beatz, and the incredibly imaginative choice of Wiz Khalifa on marijuana-tinged lead single ‘Kush Ups,’ and the record even brings a production credit for the late J Dilla on ‘My Carz,’ in which Snoop adorns a sample of Gary Numan’s ‘Cars’ with some bog-standard rapping on the hook – “My cars, they hot / My paint is wet / My bitches, they bad / That’s probably why y’all mad.”
Fergie – ‘M.I.L.F. $’
Last time we heard from Black Eyed Peas alumnus Fergie, she was jetting around the world with an atrocious disregard for either efficient travel or the wellbeing of the environment all in the name of Los Angeles. That, however, was almost two years ago, and it seems the long-rumoured Interscope followup to 2006’s Fergalicious The Dutchess is almost ready. “You got that, you got that, you got that milk money / I got that, I got that, I got that MILF money / You got that, you got that, you got that milk money / I got that, I got that, I got that MILF money,” goes the chorus. It’s like she never left.
